## Key takeaways

- Published hourly rates for senior developers in Brazil range from about $35 to $75, because sources measure different things.
- Compare offers on the all-in monthly cost for a full-time engineer, including platform or employer fees.
- A direct contractor is usually the cheapest arrangement; an EOR employee costs the most but carries the least legal risk.

Ask five sources what a senior developer in Brazil costs and you will get five numbers. Marketplace calculators say $35–$45 an hour. Price guides say $60–$75. Salary benchmarks quote annual figures that are hard to compare with either.

They are not contradicting each other. Each one measures a different point in the chain between the engineer’s pocket and your invoice. This post lines them up, explains what sits between them, and converts everything into the number that matters when you compare offers: what one full-time senior engineer costs you per month.

## How much does a senior developer in Brazil charge per hour?

Between roughly $35 and $75 per hour in 2026, depending on the source and on what the rate includes. The lower end is what vetted senior contractors earn on marketplaces; the upper end is what established senior contractors bill clients directly.

## Why do published rates disagree?

Because a rate can describe three different things:

1. **What the engineer earns.** Marketplace calculators often show the developer’s side of the rate. The client pays that plus the platform’s margin.
2. **What a platform charges you.** Nearshore platforms bundle recruiting, vetting, payroll and replacement into one price. Annual “all-in” figures like Howdy’s are in this category.
3. **What an independent contractor bills.** A senior who works directly with clients sets a rate that covers their own taxes, equipment, time between contracts and no paid vacation. It is higher per hour than a platform’s payout, and often lower than a platform’s price to you.

Years of experience explain less of the spread than these three. The rest comes from what the engineer brings. Lemon.io reports a 5–20% premium for TypeScript, Next.js and Python, and higher for machine learning; fluent English and experience shipping for US clients move rates at least as much.

## What does a senior engineer cost per month, all-in?

Monthly is the fair comparison, because most long engagements are full-time and paid monthly. Here is the same senior engineer, at about 160 working hours a month, priced four ways:

Arrangement

How the cost is built

Monthly cost (approx.)

Direct contractor

160 hours × $60–$75

$9,600–$12,000

Contractor through a platform

Howdy’s all-in $58K–$78K a year ÷ 12

$4,800–$6,500

Contractor paid via Deel

Direct rate + $49/month contractor management ([Deel](https://www.deel.com/pricing/))

Rate + $49

EOR employee

Salary + CLT charges + $599/month EOR fee ([Deel](https://www.deel.com/pricing/))

Salary × roughly 1.5 + $599

Two things stand out. First, platform all-in prices can come out lower than direct senior contractor rates. Platform benchmarks are averages across a pool of engineers, while a senior who bills directly prices their own experience and covers their own gaps between contracts. Second, EOR employment is the most expensive route: CLT employment adds 20% social security (INSS), 8% into a severance fund (FGTS), a 13th monthly salary and 30 days of paid vacation, as [Athyna’s guide](https://www.athyna.com/blog/tax-and-legal-risks-remote-developers-in-brazil) summarizes. The “roughly 1.5” multiplier is my approximation of those charges plus common benefits; confirm the exact figure with your EOR provider.

## Hourly rate or monthly retainer?

For anything longer than a few weeks, a fixed monthly rate works better for both sides. You get predictable cost and a committed engineer; the engineer gets predictable income and does not have to log every fifteen minutes.

Hourly billing makes sense for short, uncertain work: an audit, a bug investigation, a few days of help during a launch. For a full-time engagement, agree on a monthly rate for an expected workload, and a clear rule for what happens when the workload changes.

## Frequently asked questions

### How much does a senior developer in Brazil charge per hour?

Published 2026 rates run from about $35 to $75 an hour. Marketplace calculators show $35–$45 for seniors and $45–$55 for leads; price guides report $60–$75 for senior contractors billing clients directly. The difference is mostly what the rate includes: the engineer’s earnings, a platform’s margin or a contractor’s full costs.

### Is it cheaper to hire a Brazilian developer through a platform?

Often, yes, in monthly terms: platforms like Howdy quote $58,000–$78,000 a year all-in for a senior. You pay less than many direct senior rates, and you get vetting and replacement. The trade-off is less choice over who you get, and engineers who may earn less than they could directly.

### Do I pay Brazilian taxes on a contractor?

No. A contractor invoices through their own Brazilian company and pays that company’s taxes. You pay the invoice by international transfer. If you employ someone under Brazilian labor law, through an EOR or your own entity, employment charges apply. Confirm your own tax obligations with an accountant in your country.
